The on-going strike by Academic Staff Union of
Universities in Nigeria is entering its third month. Hera
are suggestions of a few things students can do to
make good use of the time the strike offers;
Get a Job: Funny, strange and odd as this may sound,
it is the best thing for a student to do; to gather on-
the-job experience, especially in a field related to their
course of study.
Learn a skill: Learning is a continuos process, and the
ASUU strike offers a wise student enough time to
learn a new skill that can serve as a source of
alternative income.
Start an enterprise- Some students had already
discovered themselves before or during campus life, the
period of the strike is a good time for them to live
their dreams and practice what they had learnt, if not
to earn income, but at least to keep them busy
Read Books- Books are embodiments of the writer’s
experience and thoughts. Remember the saying
‘experience is the best teacher’; so the experiences of
the writer will impact a lot in the life of the reader.
Learn a new language: This can be general, but very
important to students whose courses are language
related (Communication, Linguistics, History &
International Relations). Learning a new international
language can go a long way in bridging the
communication divide.
Travel-Travel is part of learning; after all, not all you
need to know will be learnt in the four walls of the
class room
